Since the immune system of your baby is still developing and cannot fight back against viruses effectively, they become prone to common colds. And the fact that common colds are common enough that everyone can catch them, you must make sure you know how well your baby everyday. Babies or infants do not have other means of communication other than crying, as parent, you must be able to comprehend what your baby is telling you about.

Generally, common colds are safe enough because they do not invade the whole body and would definitely heal on their own, still babies have the tendency of having further infections in the lower respiratory tract. That is why pneumonia is often diagnosed after the baby catches cold.

The Common Symptoms of Baby Colds

Babies do not communicate in words, but cries. And they never have the ways to tell you how they really feel. As a parent, it is up to you to discover the health of your baby and whether or not, they have sickness. As for the common colds, your baby can easily get them especially when one of the family members has it. Thus, you must always be vigilant for the signs and symptoms of common colds in babies. Here are the most common symptoms of baby colds;

1. Frequent Sneezing – your baby will never sneeze if everything is fine with him. Thus, when he does so, something is going on inside him that you should know. Most likely, it is a common cold which is developing.

2. Runny Nose – when your baby’s nose starts to run, then certainly that is common colds. The parasympathetic system is releasing too much mucus due to irritation of cold viruses.

3. Swollen Eyes – your baby’s eyes may swell and reddish in color. Although, it could be a sign of common colds, you must check with your doctor about it so that you will be advised of the proper way to treat it.

4. Sore Throat – coughing could be the best sign if your baby has a sore throat. However, when your baby loses his appetite, which is unusual for babies, then something is wrong with his throat. Check with your doctor how to go about it.

5. Feverish – more often than not, your baby becomes feverish whenever he catches cold. Thus, you will definitely purchase a medicine for fever and colds.

Although, there are known effective ways on how to treat your baby’s common colds, doctor’s advices should never be taken for granted.

When your baby catches common colds, be sure to call or check with your pediatrician or doctor so that your baby will be checked up properly. The earlier you bring your baby to the doctor, the higher the chances of healing the common colds without other health complications. So, never waste time doing self-medication and never put your baby’s health in danger. Always seek medical advices once your baby has some problems with his/her health.

Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD, is a psychological and physical condition, brought on by a stressful or frightening experience.

What are the symptoms?

The symptoms of PTSD can begin immediately after the traumatic event, or, can develop more gradually over a period of time. The psychological symptoms generally include recurring thoughts of the event and flashbacks, feelings of detachment and avoidance, irritability and hypervigilance. Physical symptoms, including nausea, headaches, sweating and chest pains may also accompany the psychological problems of PTSD. Many patients also experience depression or anxiety and misuse alcohol or drugs as part of their condition (See http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Post-traumatic-stress-disorder/Pages/Introduction.aspx)

How can PTSD be treated?

There are many treatment options available to PTSD sufferers. The treatments cannot erase the memories of the traumatic event, but instead, they aim to ease the symptoms of PTSD.

Talking therapies, such as Cognitive Behavior Therapy and counseling have proven to be effective in treating PTSD. These treatments allow the patient to verbally express his/her trauma, identify negative thought patterns and learn to relax. One of these treatments, Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing, (EMDR), has proved especially successful in treating PTSD. In EMDR the patient is asked to think about the traumatic event they have experienced whilst following, with their eyes, the hand movements of the therapist. Although it is unclear why EMDR has been so successful, it has been suggested that it may desensitize the patient’s thought patterns in relation to the trauma that he/she has experienced.

Medication is another treatment possibility for PTSD. This includes the use of anti-depressants, particularly Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors, which can ease symptoms even if the patient is not suffering from depression. Benzodiazepines can also help to reduce anxiety and improve poor sleep.

Is it possible to identify at-risk groups?

Although it remains unclear as to why people develop PTSD, there are some groups who may be more vulnerable than others. Based on recent studies, the evidence suggests that PTSD can develop in:

1 in 5 fire-fighters
1 in 3 teenage survivors of car crashes
1 in 2 female rape victims
2 in 3 prisoners of war.

(See http://www.patient.co.uk/health/Post-Traumatic-Stress-Disorder.htm)

Children who are abused or witness road traffic accidents are another at-risk PTSD group. Deployed military personnel, who are likely to witness traumatic events as part of their work, can also go on to develop PTSD.

Can PTSD be prevented?

This is a difficult question to answer without understanding the causes of PTSD. However, one thing is certain; when a person experiences trauma, immediate support is crucial, whether this comes from family and friends or a professional. Joining a self-help group and sharing experiences with others can be an important tool in recovery and in preventing PTSD.

Sometimes painful physical condition can lead to permanent damage and disability. Such condition in medical terms is known as Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy. RSD is also known as CRPS and is a multi-symptom condition affecting any or all parts of the body including shoulders, face, back, eyes, skins, muscles, and so on.

There are other names for the same syndrome, like Causalgia and also several other traumatic and post traumatic medical terms. Reasons for this are that most of the time such condition is experienced by the victim consequent upon some type of physical injuries. Nervous system could follow a simple trauma like a break or sprain, a fracture or an injury caused by a weapon. Other causes could be heart problems, surgery, spinal injuries and other physical disorders that could lead to major trauma.

If you desire to have more RSD Information, you may obtain the help of some medical journals, the Internet, or even better, your trusted physician or expert on the subject. It is for your information that RSD can affect anybody. However the ration of women affected by this syndrome is much greater compared to men, almost 5:1.

RSD Treatment is generally conducted by blocking the flow of impulses through the nerve centers that causes the syndrome in the body of a person. Common treatments for RSD are based on physical therapies and rehabilitation.

Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome or CRPS is a progressive disease of the autonomic nervous system and could be caused either by a simple or a complex trauma. The disease is a multi-symptom condition and could affect any or all vital parts of the human physique.

RSD often results in Complex Regional Pain Syndrome which means the pain could be confined to a particular part of the body. The disadvantage however is that the RSD syndrome could easily spread from one part of the body to another irrespective of the fact that the injury did occur in some other part and not where the pain is experienced. Millions of women and men suffering from RSD are now facing the same problem.

You can seek some RSD Information to know exactly what causes RSD. Ordinarily RSD is caused by some type of physical injuries. Such injuries could be minor or major. While a crushing wound could cause RSD, a small wound that looks trivial could also result in this syndrome affecting you. Another potent reason is surgery which may result in infections and ultimately the RSD.

If you look at the RSD Medical Information you will find that the scientists believe that the condition is triggered with a reflex arc, with impulses traveling along the nerves. The signal moves from area of injury to spinal cord and back again. The result is acute pain and alterations in blood flow that may cause dystrophy or defective growth.
