Americans are the worst victims of high cholesterol. The reason being their unhealthy diet, lifestyle and habits. It is very important for an average American to make serious changes in all the three fields mentioned above. Most of the Americans follow an inactive lifestyle. Some tips which we need to follow to keep the cholesterol levels low are as follows:
- Cut down on red meat. In case you are a compulsory meat eater, then ensure that fat from the meat is completed removed before cooking it. You could substitute ground turkey or some turkey bacon to lend that aroma. Do not eat more than 4 oz portion.
- Make sure you eat more of Omega 3 Fatty foods. Fish is very good for the body. Salmon fish can be substituted for red meat.
- Refrain from eating polished noodles, rice and potatoes. Include lot of whole-wheat grains or wheat wheat noodles. In case you have a temptation to eat potatoes, then you could eat a small potato about your fist size, some rice (about half a cup).
- Include whole wheat bread in each meal. But make sure you do not exceed the quantity. In case the diet menu states that you can eat sandwiches, make sure to top it with very less mayonnaise on the sandwiches. You could spice it up with some ketchup or some mustard ketchup.
- Make sure you vacate your dining chair even before your tummy is full. Obese people are susceptible to heart diseases and sugar related problems as compared to slim and active people. People who follow a sedentary lifestyle have greater chances of heart problems.
- You need to exercise for about half an hour thrice a week. You could also opt for other exercise regimes like walking, cardio exercises in the gym, aerobics and jogging too. Walking is a complete exercise since it tones up your entire body.
- Cut down on sweets and sweetened foods. They do not have any energy value. They can have negative effects on the body like excessive weight, high blood pressure, sugar related problems etc.
- Consult your family physician and go in for your cholesterol and blood sugar tests at least once in 6 months.
- Some health problems like heart ailments and diabetes are hereditary. In case your family has these problems, there are chances that you could also attract these problems. In case you are well read about these in the beginning, then it would be easier for your to be more strict as far as your diet and exercise are concerned.
