Would you like to quit smoking?
Hypnotism, the process of using suggestions under a hypnotic trance, can help many smokers quit for good. Smoking is a mental and emotional habit and habits can be broken through hypnosis when the individual is motivated to see a hypnotist and go under a hypnotic trance. It is only then that the hypnotic suggestions get deeply into the brain and reveal themselves in the way a person thinks about, feels and acts about their smoking habit. It sometimes takes just a single session while other times it takes several sessions to turn a smoker into a nonsmoker for life. Yes, it is possible to quit smoking.
Hypnotism addresses the initial phase of quitting smoking and entices the individual to throw down their cigarettes and begin the smoking cessation process. This involves putting the individual in a hypnotic trance and feeding them suggestions that make cigarettes seem distasteful. The suggestions include (but are not limited to) “The smell of smoke is distasteful to me” or “I hate the taste of cigarettes” or “I don’t like the way cigarettes make me feel”. These suggestions are repeated by the hypnotized person and get deep within their brain, allowing them to actually feel these things once they are awakened from the hypnotic trance. The statements stick with them enough so they stand a good chance to quit smoking.
Hypnotism must also address the issue of nicotine withdrawal—a side effect that can derail the smoking cessation process. Nicotine withdrawal involves being irritable, craving cigarettes, having the shakes when one stops smoking and feeling a sense of despair when one quits smoking. Hypnotism can take care of these issues by using the hypnotic trance and giving suggestions related to nicotine withdrawal. These can include “I will not feel irritable when I quit smoking” or “My body will not react to the fact that I quit smoking” or “I will no longer feel shaky when I stop smoking cigarettes.” The body responds to these suggestions and will affect the physiology of the body when the person is able to quit smoking.
Hypnotism, as mentioned, may take more than one session. This is because things turn up along the way that affect the way the person acts around other smokers or the way the person reacts around certain triggers that can cause a relapse. During a session that tackles these triggers, the individual is put into a peaceful hypnotic trance and is given suggestions like “I will not feel like smoking around other smokers” or “I will not feel like smoking when my spouse smokes” or “I will not feel like smoking after every meal and will remain a nonsmoker.” These are the final steps to encourage a client to quit smoking.
Hypnotism is very effective in smoking cessation and is one of the number one reasons a person sees a hypnotist. Ideally, it can be tackled in a single session but practically speaking, several sessions make for a better success rate from this nasty habit.
